Pre-K (ages 3–4)

Draw a simple map of your home or yard! Mark your room, the kitchen, the front door, and your favorite spots. Learn that maps show where things are.

Difficulty 1 of 3

Steps

  1. Look around your home together. Talk about each room.
  2. On a big piece of paper, draw a simple box for each room.
  3. Label each room with a picture: bed for bedroom, stove for kitchen.
  4. Mark special spots with a star: 'Where's your favorite place to play?'
  5. Walk through the house and compare it to the map: 'Does our map look right?'

Learning objectives

  • Understand that maps represent real places from a bird's-eye view
  • Identify and label familiar rooms and locations
  • Connect a drawn representation to a real physical space

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Create a detailed map of your neighborhood! Include your house, neighbors' houses, the park, streets, and landmarks. Add a compass rose and a map key.

Steps

  1. Walk around your neighborhood together, noticing landmarks and features.
  2. Back home, draw your street with your house in the center.
  3. Add neighbors' houses, the park, trees, mailboxes, stop signs, and other landmarks.
  4. Draw a compass rose (N, S, E, W) and a map key with symbols.
  5. Use the map to give someone directions: 'Walk north past 2 houses, then turn east at the big tree.'

Learning objectives

  • Create a map with recognizable landmarks and spatial relationships
  • Include map features: compass rose, key, and labels
  • Use cardinal directions (north, south, east, west) to describe locations

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Create a scaled map of your neighborhood or a local area. Include a distance scale, compass rose, detailed map key, and written directions for a walking route between two landmarks.

Steps

  1. Take a walk and count your steps between landmarks (house to park, park to store, etc.).
  2. Back home, decide on a scale: for example, 10 steps = 1 inch on your map.
  3. Draw your map on graph paper using the scale to place landmarks at correct relative distances.
  4. Include a compass rose, a scale bar, and a detailed map key with at least 6 symbols.
  5. Write step-by-step directions for someone to walk from your house to a landmark using your map.
  6. Test your directions: have a family member follow them and see if they work!

Learning objectives

  • Create a map with a distance scale based on real measurement
  • Use graph paper and proportional spacing to represent real distances
  • Write clear directional instructions using cardinal directions and landmarks
  • Test and revise written directions based on feedback

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Design a comprehensive community map with multiple layers of information. Include a grid coordinate system, calculate real distances, compare your map to an online map, and write a 'Neighborhood Guide' for a visitor.

Steps

  1. Create a large-scale neighborhood map on poster paper with a grid coordinate system (A1, B2, etc.).
  2. Walk the area and measure distances using a pedometer, bike odometer, or car odometer with a parent.
  3. Plot at least 15 landmarks with accurate relative positions and a proper distance scale.
  4. Add a second 'layer' showing community resources: water fountains, emergency phones, public restrooms, bus stops.
  5. Compare your hand-drawn map to a satellite view online. How accurate were you? Mark differences.
  6. Write a 'Neighborhood Guide' (1 page) for a visitor: describe the area, list top 5 spots to visit, and include grid coordinates for each.

  • Collect and record real-world geographic data through field observation
  • Compare hand-drawn maps to professional maps and analyze accuracy
  • Create informational writing that combines map skills with descriptive detail

Safety and evidence note

Read the full activity before beginning. An adult should supervise tools, heat, food, outdoor work, movement, and experiments as appropriate. Completion records that the activity was done; the child’s explanation, work sample, photo, or demonstration is stronger evidence of learning than a completion check alone.
