Steps
- Warm up: squeeze, roll, and pound the clay to make it soft.
- Practice basic shapes: roll a ball, make a snake, flatten a pancake.
- Combine shapes to build something: a snowman (3 balls), a snake (long roll), or a pizza (flat circle with toppings).
- Make your favorite animal from clay. Add details with a toothpick.
- Display your sculptures and tell a story about each one.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Steps
- Learn pinch pot: push your thumb into a ball of clay and pinch around the edges to form a bowl.
- Learn coiling: roll long snakes of clay and coil them on top of each other to build a vessel.
- Learn slab building: roll clay flat and cut shapes, then join them to make a box or picture frame.
- Use tools (toothpick, fork, pencil) to add textures and details to your pieces.
- Create one functional piece (bowl, cup, or box) and one decorative piece (animal, figure, or abstract sculpture).

Early elementary (ages 6–8)
Study sculpture as art: additive vs. subtractive techniques, form and space, and sculptors throughout history. Create a multi-piece sculpture project.
Steps
- Study additive sculpture (adding material: clay, papier-mache) vs. subtractive (removing material: carving soap or plaster).
- Practice scoring and slipping: to join clay pieces, scratch both surfaces and use wet clay as 'glue.'
- Carve a simple sculpture from a bar of soap: a fish, leaf, or geometric shape. (Safety: an adult handles all sharp tools — knives, blades, carving tools — and supervises cutting. Kids can use plastic tools, popsicle sticks, or pencils for detail work.)
- Study a famous sculptor: Michelangelo, Brancusi, or Isamu Noguchi. How did they approach form?
- Create a multi-piece sculpture series on a theme (3 related pieces that tell a story or explore a concept).
- Photograph your sculptures from multiple angles and write an artist's statement.

- Create a mixed media sculpture combining clay, wire, found objects, and recycled materials.
- Design a kinetic sculpture (one that moves): use hanging elements, balanced mobiles, or wind-powered parts.
- Research environmental art/land art: artists like Andy Goldsworthy who create art in and from nature. Create a temporary nature sculpture.
- Explore abstraction: create a sculpture that represents an emotion or concept rather than a recognizable object.
- Curate a sculpture exhibition: display your works with title cards, medium descriptions, and an artist bio.
