Difficulty 1 of 3

Steps

  1. Build the tallest tower you can from blocks. How high can you go before it falls?
  2. Build a bridge between two stacks of books using cardboard. Can it hold a toy car?
  3. Build a house with a door and windows using boxes or Legos.
  4. Talk about it: Why do some buildings fall? What makes them stronger? (Wide base, sturdy connections)
  5. Draw a picture of your favorite building you made.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Learn about different building types and design a dream house. Draw floor plans and build models using craft materials.

Steps

  1. Look at pictures of different buildings: houses, skyscrapers, churches, stadiums. How are they different?
  2. Draw a floor plan of your dream house: where would each room be? Include doors and windows.
  3. Build a model of one room using a shoebox: add furniture from paper, clay, or small objects.
  4. Learn about architects: they design buildings by drawing plans before anything is built.
  5. Present your dream house design: explain your choices for each room.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Study architectural design: structural engineering basics, famous buildings, architectural styles, and sustainable design. Create detailed building plans.

Steps

  1. Study structural engineering: why are triangles stronger than squares? Test by building both shapes from straws and tape, then pressing on each.
  2. Research 5 famous buildings and their architectural styles: classical (columns), Gothic (pointed arches), modern (glass/steel), organic (flowing curves).
  3. Design a community building (library, school, or community center): draw front elevation, side elevation, and floor plan with scale.
  4. Build a model using straws, tape, cardboard, and other materials. Focus on structural integrity.
  5. Learn about sustainable architecture: green roofs, solar panels, natural ventilation. Add one green feature to your design.
  6. Present your architectural design in a 'client meeting' format: show plans, explain choices, and answer questions.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Design a real or imagined space using an architect's process. Interview, plan, present, and revise like a young designer.

Steps

  1. Interview a family member about their dream room, garden, or workspace, or imagine a design user if no real project is available. Ask about: colors they love, the size of the space, must-have features, budget, and who would use it.
  2. Design a detailed floor plan or landscape on graph paper. Include measurements and labeled zones (sleep zone, work zone, planting bed, etc.).
  3. Build a simple mood board with color samples and material ideas — magazine clippings, fabric scraps, paint chips, photos printed from online.
  4. Present your design and mood board to a family member or trusted adult. Walk them through your choices.
  5. Gather feedback. What did they love? What would they change?
  6. Iterate once: revise the floor plan or mood board based on that feedback and present version 2.

Safety and evidence note

Read the full activity before beginning. An adult should supervise tools, heat, food, outdoor work, movement, and experiments as appropriate. Completion records that the activity was done; the child’s explanation, work sample, photo, or demonstration is stronger evidence of learning than a completion check alone.
