Difficulty 1 of 3

Steps

  1. Set up watercolor paints, water cup, brushes, and thick paper.
  2. Practice using the brush: dip in water, then in paint, then make strokes on paper.
  3. Experiment with water: more water = lighter color, less water = stronger color.
  4. Mix 2 colors together on paper. What new color did you make?
  5. Paint a picture of something you love: your pet, your family, or a rainbow.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Learn watercolor techniques: wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, color blending, and resist. Paint a landscape using these techniques.

Steps

  1. Practice wet-on-wet: wet the paper with clean water, then drop in paint and watch it spread.
  2. Practice wet-on-dry: paint on dry paper for crisp, controlled lines.
  3. Learn to blend: paint one color, then while wet, add a second color next to it and let them blend.
  4. Try wax resist: draw with a white crayon on white paper, then paint over it. The crayon resists the paint!
  5. Paint a landscape using all techniques: wet-on-wet sky, wet-on-dry ground, blended sunset, wax resist details.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Develop watercolor skills: color theory, value (light to dark), washes, glazing, and salt/texture effects. Paint a series of studies.

Steps

  1. Study color theory: paint a color wheel showing primary, secondary, and tertiary colors.
  2. Practice value scales: paint one color from very light (watery) to very dark (concentrated) in 5 steps.
  3. Learn flat wash and graded wash techniques. Paint smooth, even backgrounds.
  4. Explore texture effects: sprinkle salt on wet paint, use plastic wrap, or splatter with a toothbrush.
  5. Paint a series of 3 studies: a still life (fruit or flowers), a landscape, and an abstract using texture techniques.
  6. Frame your best painting and write an artist's statement about your technique choices.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Take on a family watercolor brief. Interview, sketch, revise, and deliver a finished piece the way a young commissioned artist might work.

Steps

  1. A family member gives you a watercolor brief for a gift or room decoration. Interview them: Who is it for? What do they love? What's the occasion? What colors should you use?
  2. Sketch 2 different design options on scrap paper.
  3. Show both sketches to your family member. Take their feedback. Ask which they prefer and why.
  4. Paint the final piece on your best paper. Take your time — this is going to be given to a real person.
  5. Present the finished piece and explain one change you made based on feedback.

  • Conduct a simple creative interview to gather design requirements
  • Iterate on a design based on feedback
  • Deliver a finished custom artwork for a real recipient

Read the full activity before beginning. An adult should supervise tools, heat, food, outdoor work, movement, and experiments as appropriate. Completion records that the activity was done; the child’s explanation, work sample, photo, or demonstration is stronger evidence of learning than a completion check alone.
