Parent note

Frame sun-safety as a lifelong skill, not a fear. Show kids your own sunscreen routine — they copy habits. ABCDE mole-check for Upper Elementary is a body-awareness skill, not a cancer lecture — never diagnose, just teach 'notice and ask a doctor.' Skin-tone inclusivity matters: melanin protects but doesn't eliminate risk, and the 'I don't burn so I don't need sunscreen' myth is particularly dangerous for darker-skinned kids who may have late-diagnosed melanomas. Reef-safe sunscreen is a good way to introduce environmental ethics alongside self-care.

Pre-K (ages 3–4)

Steps

  1. Find all 3 sun-smart items: a wide hat, a long-sleeve shirt, sunscreen. Put them together in a 'sun kit'.
  2. Learn the sun-smart song: 'Hat on head, sun on shade, lotion on before I play.'
  3. UV-reactive beads (cheap, online): string 5 on a cord. Inside they're white. Outside they turn purple/blue/pink — that's UV.
  4. Outside test: walk through full sun, shade, and under a hat. Watch the beads change at each spot.
  5. Practice putting on sunscreen with help: face, ears, neck, arms, tops of feet if wearing sandals.
  6. Learn the rule: wear sunscreen whenever you're outside for more than 15 minutes on a sunny day.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Explore sunscreen SPF labels, test UV beads under 4 conditions, and learn why the sun both helps and hurts our skin.

Steps

  1. Look at 3 sunscreen bottles. Find the SPF number. Bigger number = more protection from sunburn.
  2. UV bead 4-way test: (1) direct sun, (2) shade, (3) through a window, (4) under sunscreen-coated plastic wrap. Predict first — which will stay white?
  3. Results: beads turn color outdoors and through windows (UVA gets through glass!), stay white under sunscreen.
  4. Learn 2 things the sun does for us: makes us feel good, helps our body make vitamin D. And 2 it does against us: sunburn (short-term), skin aging + skin cancer risk (long-term).
  5. Time-out math: how long can you be in the sun without sunscreen before getting pink? Ask a grown-up about your skin. Most kids: 15–30 minutes.
  6. Practice applying sunscreen alone: squirt 6 dots (forehead, each cheek, nose, chin, ear), rub in. Repeat on arms and legs. Reapply every 2 hours.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Skin anatomy lesson, UV + DNA connection, design a family sun-safety plan including hats, SPF, and shade-timing by season.

Steps

  1. Skin anatomy: label epidermis (outer), dermis (middle, with sweat + oil glands, hair roots), subcutis (fat layer). Learn melanin — the pigment that protects from UV.
  2. UV types: UVA (aging, penetrates deeper, through glass), UVB (burning, blocked by glass). Both increase skin cancer risk.
  3. Look up your local UV Index for this week (weather.gov or phone weather app). Index 0–2 low, 3–5 moderate, 6–7 high, 8–10 very high, 11+ extreme.
  4. Plan: which times of day is the UV Index highest? (Usually 10am–4pm.) When does your family go outside most? Is there a mismatch?
  5. Sunscreen deep-dive: SPF 30 blocks ~97% of UVB, SPF 50 blocks ~98%. Diminishing returns above 50. Must reapply every 2 hrs or after swimming.
  6. Physical vs. chemical sunscreen: zinc oxide + titanium dioxide (physical, sit on skin) vs. avobenzone + oxybenzone (chemical, absorbed). Research the reef-safe debate.
  7. Design a family Sun-Smart Plan: (1) sunscreen choice + reapply schedule, (2) hat + shirt rule for the pool and beach, (3) peak-hour shade strategy, (4) post-sun skin check for moles or new spots.
  8. Extension: skin self-check. Learn the ABCDE rule for moles: Asymmetry, Border irregular, Color uneven, Diameter > 6mm, Evolving. Never diagnose — but notice.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Research UV + DNA damage at the molecular level, skin-cancer epidemiology, and run a 2-week family sun-behavior change experiment with data.

Steps

  1. Molecular biology: UVB hits DNA and creates thymine dimers (two T's bonded wrong) → mutations. Most are repaired; some become cancer over decades.
  2. 3 skin cancer types: basal cell (most common, rarely spreads), squamous cell (more serious), melanoma (from melanocytes, deadliest). Look at photos (parent-guided).
  3. Epidemiology: Australia has the highest skin cancer rate globally — research why (latitude, UV index, population skin tones). What did their 'Slip, Slop, Slap' campaign change?
  4. Skin-tone + melanin: people with more melanin have lower skin cancer risk but are NOT immune. Higher risk: rare skin cancers that tend to be caught late because people assume they're safe.
  5. 2-week behavior experiment: baseline week (record sun-time, sunscreen use, UV Index, any sunburn) → intervention week (hat + reapply + shade 10–4) → compare journal entries.
  6. Design a family Sun Protection Report Card: grade current habits A–F across sunscreen, hats, shade-seeking, post-sun check. Hang on the fridge.
  7. Research the vitamin D paradox: sunscreen reduces vitamin D production. Most dermatologists: 10–15 min incidental sun on arms/face is enough. Winter or high-latitude families: food + supplement is the answer, not sunburn.
  8. Interview a family member with a history of sunburns, moles removed, or skin-cancer in the family. What would they tell their 10-year-old self?
  9. Extension 1: build a shade-timing tool for your yard / park — a stick + chalk outline on sunny ground every hour. Map where shade moves.
  10. Extension 2: write an op-ed about your school's sun policy (sunscreen at recess? hats at the field? shade on the playground?). Send it if you're brave.
