This is the capstone lesson for the Anatomy Systems strand. Best used AFTER completing bw-010 through bw-018 so the child has context for each system. The Upper Elem sandwich report makes a great portfolio piece.

How this changes by age

Pre-K (ages 3–4)

Build a life-size body poster with YOU inside it! Stick stickers and drawings on to show your bones, heart, lungs, and tummy.

Steps

  1. Tape together big paper and trace the child lying down.
  2. Give the child stickers or pre-cut shapes for: a heart, two lungs, a stomach, bones in arms and legs, and a brain in the head.
  3. As child sticks each one in place, parent says what it does: 'The heart pumps blood. The lungs breathe air. The stomach takes in food. Bones hold you up. The brain is the boss.'
  4. Add a smile on the face, hair on the head, and color in the skin.
  5. Hang the poster up. Over the next week, parent points at parts and asks: 'Where is your heart? What does it do?'
  6. Celebrate: 'You have everything you need inside you. Your body is amazing!'

  • State the main job of each body part in simple words
  • Feel pride and curiosity about their own body

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Label the 5 big body systems with color-coded markers on one body outline. See how all of you fits together.

Steps

  1. Trace the body outline on big paper.
  2. Use 5 different color markers, one per system. Provide a legend: RED = circulatory (heart + blood), BLUE = respiratory (lungs + airways), GREEN = digestive (mouth + stomach + intestines), BLACK = skeletal (bones), BROWN = muscular (muscles on top of bones).
  3. Draw each system in its own color. Label at least 2 organs per system.
  4. Play 'System Quick-Quiz': parent calls a color, child points to an organ of that color and names it. 10 rounds.
  5. Write 2 sentences about how 2 systems work together. Example: 'When I run, my lungs (blue) and heart (red) both work hard. My lungs get oxygen; my heart pumps it to my muscles.'
  6. Hang the poster in a visible spot. Over the next 2 weeks, point out real-life system events: 'You just swallowed — that's your digestive system working!' 'Feel how fast your heart is beating — that's circulatory!'

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Build an interactive 'Body Systems Museum' with flap-and-reveal displays. Host a family tour and quiz them.

Steps

  1. Choose 6 body systems to feature: skeletal, muscular, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, nervous. (Add immune, endocrine, or sensory if ambitious.)
  2. For each system, make a display card (construction paper or cardboard). Include: system name, main organs, primary job, one fun fact, and a flap that lifts to reveal an answer to a question.
  3. Example: SKELETAL. Organs: 206 bones. Job: structure, movement, protection. Fun fact: your smallest bone is in your ear (stapes, size of a grain of rice). Flap question: How many bones were you born with? Answer: About 300 — some fuse together as you grow.
  4. Add an interactive element to each display: skeletal (feel a bone), circulatory (pulse check), respiratory (balloon breath), digestive (30-ft yarn length), muscular (flex bicep), nervous (ruler-drop reaction time).
  5. Set up the museum around the living room. Invite family members.
  6. Host the tour: give a 2-minute guided explanation of each display. Include the hands-on demo.
  7. End with a 10-question quiz. Score each family member. Give small prizes (a sticker, a choice of family activity).
  8. Write a reflection: which system was hardest to explain? Which was most fun to demo?

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Write a 'System Integration Report' tracing what happens in 5 body systems when you eat a sandwich. Make the invisible visible.

Steps

  1. Pick one meal to analyze: a turkey-and-cheese sandwich with an apple and a glass of water. You will trace every body system involved from bite to energy.
  2. System 1 — Muscular + Skeletal: your jaw muscles (masseter, temporalis) contract. Your teeth (incisors, canines, molars) cut, tear, and grind. Describe the mechanics.
  3. System 2 — Nervous + Sensory: taste buds detect 5 flavors. Smell adds richness. Brain's reward system releases dopamine if you like it. Nervous system coordinates chewing + swallowing.
  4. System 3 — Digestive: trace the sandwich through esophagus → stomach → small intestine → large intestine. Name 3 enzymes that break it down. Identify where each macronutrient (bread carbs, cheese fat, turkey protein) is mostly absorbed.
  5. System 4 — Circulatory + Respiratory: once nutrients enter the bloodstream, your heart pumps them to every cell. Cells use oxygen (from lungs) to burn nutrients for ATP (energy molecule). CO2 from this process returns via blood to lungs, exhaled.
  6. System 5 — Endocrine: insulin from pancreas lets cells take up blood sugar. If you eat too much sugar at once, insulin spikes and you may crash later.
  7. System 6 — Urinary + Integumentary: extra water leaves via kidneys (urine) and skin (sweat). Waste products (urea from protein breakdown) leave via kidneys.
  8. Draw a single flowchart on large paper tracing the sandwich through all 6 systems, with arrows and labels.
  9. Write a 2-page report: choose a meal, walk it through all systems, and end with the observation that ONE simple meal engages EVERY major body system simultaneously.
  10. Extension: compare how the same 6 systems respond to: (1) a sandwich with whole-grain bread + salad + water vs. (2) a candy bar + soda. Which one supports steadier energy, and why?

Read the full activity before beginning. An adult should supervise tools, heat, food, outdoor work, movement, and experiments as appropriate. Completion records that the activity was done; the child’s explanation, work sample, photo, or demonstration is stronger evidence of learning than a completion check alone.
