Make a Sleep Friends chart — sleep buddies that help bedtime feel good. Practice a 3-step wind-down every night for a week.
Materials and setup

Parent note
Sleep routines for kids are primarily parent-driven — child self-tracking builds awareness but parents set bedtime. Don't let the tracking itself become stressful. The shorter version is better for launch because it teaches pattern-spotting without turning bedtime into a month-long experiment. If a child shows signs of persistent sleep problems (3+ weeks of trouble falling asleep, frequent night waking, daytime exhaustion), consult a pediatrician — this isn't a diagnostic tool.

Pre-K (ages 3–4)

Steps
- Draw 3 Sleep Friends on a poster: Soft Pajamas, Dark Room, Quiet Story.
- Practice the 3-step wind-down: (1) pajamas on, (2) lights off except one reading lamp, (3) one short story read very quietly.
- Add stickers to the poster for each night the 3-step happens without a fight.
- Talk about how sleep makes our bodies strong and our brains smart — sleep is how we grow!
- End the week by counting stickers and giving a 'Sleep Champion' high-five.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)
Become a Sleep Scientist for 7 nights. Track bedtime, wake time, and morning energy. Find your best sleep recipe.
Steps
- Make a sleep chart: 7 nights × 3 columns (bedtime, wake time, morning energy 1–5 stars).
- Each night, fill in the chart with a parent. In the morning, rate how your body feels.
- Aim for 10–12 hours of sleep (recommended for ages 5–6).
- After 7 nights, circle your best-energy morning. What was bedtime that night? What happened before bed?
- Write a Sleep Recipe on a card: 'My best sleep happens when I go to bed by ___, with ___ (bath, story, music), and screen-off by ___.'
- Try the recipe for 3 more nights. Did it work?

Early elementary (ages 6–8)
Dive into sleep science: sleep cycles, REM vs. deep sleep, what happens in the brain overnight, and how screens mess with melatonin.
Steps
- Learn the 4 sleep stages: Stage 1 (drowsy, 5 min), Stage 2 (light sleep, 50% of night), Stage 3 (deep sleep, body repair), REM (dream sleep, memory consolidation). We cycle through these ~5 times per night.
- Learn about melatonin: the brain's sleep hormone, released when darkness hits the eyes. Blue light from screens BLOCKS melatonin by up to 50%, pushing sleep back.
- Experiment: for 3 nights, turn off all screens 60 minutes before bed. For 3 other nights, use screens until 10 min before bed. Track time-to-fall-asleep by guessing.
- Learn about SLEEP DEBT: losing 1 hour/night for a week is like staying up all night. The body doesn't just 'catch up' on weekends — chronic short sleep shrinks memory and mood.
- Recommended hours by age: 6–7 yr = 10–11 hrs; 8–9 yr = 9–11 hrs.
- Write a Sleep Science poster covering: the 4 stages, melatonin + screens, sleep debt, 5 tips for better sleep.
- Extension: research animals that sleep very differently (dolphins sleep with half a brain at a time; giraffes sleep ~2 hrs/day).

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)
Run a shorter sleep-routine experiment. Track a few bedtime variables, test simple changes, and write your best sleep plan.
Steps
- Days 1-3 — BASELINE: track bedtime, wake time, total sleep, and morning energy. No changes.
- Days 4-6 — INTERVENTION 1: no screens 60 minutes before bed. Keep the same simple metrics.
- Days 7-9 — INTERVENTION 2: add a consistent wind-down routine such as reading or stretching. Keep tracking.
- Days 10-12 — INTERVENTION 3: combine the first two changes and, with a parent, try an earlier bedtime if appropriate.
- Chart the 12 days of data. Which change seemed most helpful for morning energy or bedtime ease?
- Write a 1-2 page Sleep Plan report: your question, what you tried, a simple graph, what you noticed, and the bedtime routine you want to keep.
- Extension 1: research circadian rhythms and chronotypes (morning lark vs. night owl). Which are you? Does your family's schedule fit your chronotype?
- Extension 2: investigate why teens' circadian rhythms shift later in puberty — and why early school start times are controversial.

Safety and evidence note
Read the full activity before beginning. An adult should supervise tools, heat, food, outdoor work, movement, and experiments as appropriate. Completion records that the activity was done; the child’s explanation, work sample, photo, or demonstration is stronger evidence of learning than a completion check alone.
