Macro Power-Up Chef
Build a 'power-up plate' using colored play-food or real snacks. Each color gives a different superpower: red = running, yellow = thinking, green = growing, blue = strong bones.
Materials and setup

- index cards for Plate Quest (Kinder)
- nutrition-labeled foods + notebook + calculator (Early Elem, Upper Elem)
- ingredients for 1–3 cooked meals
- chart paper or spreadsheet (Upper Elem)
Parent note
Never frame foods as 'bad' or tie eating to body shape. Keep language on energy, focus, and strength — what food helps your body do. Avoid exact macro targets for kids unless guided by a clinician. The goal is learning and meal-building, not restriction.
How this changes by age
Pre-K (ages 3–4)
Build a 'power-up plate' using colored play-food or real snacks. Each color gives a different superpower: red = running, yellow = thinking, green = growing, blue = strong bones.
Steps
- Set out 4 small bowls on the counter. Label each with a color and a superpower (red = run fast, yellow = think fast, green = grow tall, blue = strong bones).
- Together, sort snacks into bowls by color: strawberries in red, banana slices or pasta in yellow, cucumber in green, yogurt or milk cup in blue.
- Parent narrates as you sort: 'carrots are orange-ish red — they help you RUN!'
- Build your 'power-up plate': the child chooses 1 item from each bowl to make a meal with all 4 superpowers.
- Eat the plate together. After each bite, make the matching superhero move: run in place, touch your head, stand tall, flex a muscle.
- Finish by drawing your plate on paper and labeling (or coloring) each power-up.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)
Level up to a real 'Plate Quest' game. Earn points by building plates that match Plate Quest Cards (e.g., 'Build a plate with protein + fruit + veggie + whole grain'). Score, cook, eat!
Steps
- Prep a snack buffet with 8–10 options across 4 food-group bins: PROTEIN (cheese cubes, boiled egg, turkey slices, beans), GRAIN (whole-grain crackers, brown rice), FRUIT (berries, apple slices, orange wedges), VEGGIE (cucumber coins, carrot sticks, cherry tomatoes).
- Make 5 Plate Quest cards on index cards. Each card lists 3–4 items to include. Example: 'Protein + veggie + grain — no fruit!' or 'Rainbow plate — 3 colors!'
- Draw a card, build the plate, show the parent, then eat a bite of each item and rate it 1–5 stars.
- Score: 5 points per matched item on the card. Bonus +3 for trying a food the child hasn't had before.
- Repeat for 3 cards. Swap roles — child makes a card for the parent to build.
- Finish by writing a family menu for tomorrow using at least one Plate Quest card as the rule for each meal.

- Identify at least 3 foods in each of the 4 food groups (protein, grain, fruit, veggie)
- Build a meal plate that meets a written set of criteria
- Rate food tastes and argue for one new food to add to the family menu
Early elementary (ages 6–8)
Become a Macro Chef — use labels and quick math to compare a few meals and build one balanced plate.
Steps
- Refresh the big three macros: PROTEIN builds muscle and keeps you full (~4 cal/gram), CARBS are fast fuel for brain and muscles (~4 cal/gram), FATS are slow fuel and build cell walls + brains (~9 cal/gram).
- Pick 5 real foods from the pantry/fridge. Read each nutrition label and record grams of protein, carbs, and fat per serving in a notebook.
- Notice patterns in the foods you chose: which are mostly protein, mostly carbs, or mostly fat? Which meals already mix more than one of these?
- Build a 'Chef Challenge': design one breakfast, one lunch, and one snack that each include a carb source, a protein source, and either a healthy fat or a fruit/vegetable.
- Cook ONE of the meals yourself — e.g., a veggie-and-egg scramble with toast. Compare your portion to the label serving size and adjust your math if your scramble is bigger or smaller.
- Taste test: rate each meal 1–5 on taste and fullness. Note which meal kept you full longest (usually the one with most protein + fat).
- Make a Macro Chef Menu Card with your final meal ideas, the main macros in each one, and a photo or drawing of your favorite dish.
- Extension: research one 'hidden macro' surprise — e.g., avocado is mostly fat and fiber, not carbs; Greek yogurt has 2x the protein of regular yogurt; popcorn is a whole grain.

- Compare the macro makeup of a few foods or meals
- Cook one balanced meal and compare intuition vs. actual label math
Upper elementary (ages 8–10)
Run a short breakfast comparison experiment: hypothesis, data collection, cooking, and a written report about energy and fullness.
Steps
- Phase 1 — Hypothesis: pick one question to test over 3 days. Examples: 'Does a high-protein breakfast keep me full longer than a high-carb breakfast?' or 'Does eating more fiber change my energy during afternoon homework?' Write a clear hypothesis: 'If I eat ___, then I will feel/measure ___.'
- Phase 2 — Design the experiment: same lunch, dinner, and snacks each day; only the breakfast (or variable you picked) changes. Control the other variables (sleep, activity) as much as possible.
- Phase 3 — Build a data log. Each day record: the breakfast you ate, the main protein/carb/fat sources, hunger at 10am/noon/3pm (1–5 scale), focus on homework (1–5), and mood (1–5).
- Phase 4 — Cook and eat your 3 breakfasts. Example A: oatmeal + honey + banana (high carb). Example B: eggs + avocado + berries (high protein + fat). Example C: Greek yogurt + nuts + granola (balanced).
- Phase 5 — Chart your data. Make a bar chart or line graph of each rating over the 3 days.
- Phase 6 — Write a lab report: hypothesis, methods, data (chart), results, discussion, limitations ('n=1, hard to isolate variables'), and next experiment.
- Phase 7 — Micro-bonus: for each breakfast, note at least 2 vitamins or minerals it provides (like calcium, iron, vitamin C, or potassium).
- Phase 8 — Teach someone: present your findings to a sibling or parent in a 3-minute talk. Defend your conclusion.
- Extension: design a 'Family Power-Up Breakfast' based on your results and cook it for the family. Collect their hunger/focus ratings and compare with yours.
Learning objectives
- Design and run a controlled n=1 self-experiment with a clear hypothesis
- Collect quantitative nutrition and subjective wellbeing data across 3 days
- Analyze and visualize the data in a chart, then write a proper lab-style report
- Defend conclusions and name at least 2 limitations of self-experiments
Safety and evidence note
Read the full activity before beginning. An adult should supervise tools, heat, food, outdoor work, movement, and experiments as appropriate. Completion records that the activity was done; the child’s explanation, work sample, photo, or demonstration is stronger evidence of learning than a completion check alone.
