Parent note

Pre-K skipped — too abstract. This activity is especially valuable for kids already in organized sports. Emphasize that eating enough and recovering well matter more than trying to copy a pro athlete exactly. Keep the lesson away from physique, weight, or supplement culture.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Test 2 snacks before play time: candy vs. banana. Which one keeps you going longer?

Steps

  1. Pick 2 snacks for the experiment: (1) a candy or cookie (fast sugar), (2) a banana or apple with peanut butter (slow + balanced).
  2. Split into 2 test days. Same time, same activity (1 hour of active play or a bike ride).
  3. Day 1: eat snack A 20 minutes before play. Time how long you play before feeling tired or hungry. Rate energy 1-5 after 15, 30, 45, 60 minutes.
  4. Day 2: eat snack B 20 minutes before play. Repeat the same activity. Same time. Rate energy at the same 4 points.
  5. Compare: which snack kept you going longer? Which one led to a crash or hunger faster?
  6. Draw 2 energy curves on paper. Candy snack usually = fast up, fast down. Banana + PB = slower up, slower down, more total energy.
  7. Conclusion: 'For playing and sports, ___ is better for me.'

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Build a pre/during/post workout fueling guide. Test it on a real 30-minute activity and measure how you feel.

Steps

  1. Research sports fueling basics: (1) PRE (1-2 hours before) — complex carb + some protein (oatmeal + berries, toast + peanut butter, yogurt + granola). (2) DURING (only if >60 minutes) — fast carbs (banana, pretzels, sports drink). Short workouts don't need during-fuel. (3) POST (within 30-60 min) — carb + protein in a 3:1 or 4:1 ratio to refill muscle energy and repair (chocolate milk, turkey sandwich, rice + chicken + veggies).
  2. Pick a 30-minute activity: bike ride, soccer practice, obstacle course, running.
  3. Pre-fuel test: eat a balanced snack 60 minutes before. Do the activity. Rate: energy 1-10, strength 1-10, stamina 1-10.
  4. Post-fuel test: within 45 minutes of finishing, eat a post-workout meal. Rate recovery 1-10 at 2 hours after (any lingering tiredness? sore muscles the next day?).
  5. Repeat with a WRONG-fuel day: eat a heavy meal right before (or nothing at all), no post-workout refuel. Rate same metrics.
  6. Compare your 2 days. Most kids feel clearly better with good pre + post fuel.
  7. Build a personal Sports Fuel Card: 3 go-to pre-workout snacks, 2 go-to post-workout meals. Laminate or keep in kitchen.
  8. Extension: research general hydration habits for active kids and turn them into a simple family checklist for before, during, and after longer activity.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Study how athletes think about food and hydration, then design a simple game-day fueling plan for your own activity.

Steps

  1. Research the nutrition plan of a professional athlete in a sport you care about: marathoner, swimmer, basketball player, gymnast, tennis player, soccer player. Use published interviews or team nutrition documents.
  2. Build a summary: what do they eat on rest days, training days, and game days? Focus on patterns like timing, hydration, and balanced meals rather than exact numbers or supplements.
  3. Compare to your own routine in broad strokes. What feels realistic to copy at your age, and what belongs to a professional adult athlete?
  4. Pick ONE of your own events: a soccer game, a track meet, a competition, a long hike, a timed run. Real or planned.
  5. Design a full 24-hour fueling plan: breakfast (5h before), lunch (3h before), pre-event snack (1h before), during-event fuel (if >60 min), immediate post (<30 min), recovery meal (2-3h after).
  6. Outline the meals and snacks across the day without calculating exact calories.
  7. Execute the plan. Track: performance (time, score, distance, subjective 1-10), energy through the event, recovery over next 24 hours (soreness, fatigue).
  8. Compare the planned-fuel day to a non-planned day (previous session or a reasonable baseline).
  9. Write a 2-page report: the athlete research, your plan, your execution data, your conclusion. Include 3 things you'd change next time.
  10. Extension: research why athletes need enough sleep, food, and recovery time, and explain why under-fueling can hurt performance and growth.

Read the full activity before beginning. An adult should supervise tools, heat, food, outdoor work, movement, and experiments as appropriate. Completion records that the activity was done; the child’s explanation, work sample, photo, or demonstration is stronger evidence of learning than a completion check alone.
