Pre-K skipped — label reading is age-inappropriate. Upper Elem activity is a full media-literacy lesson — one of the most valuable life skills in this whole curriculum. Consider pairing with a trip to the grocery store to make the learning hands-on.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Find 3 important facts on any food label: serving size, calories, and sugar. Become a mini-detective!

Steps

  1. Show a nutrition label. Point to the top: 'Serving size — how much counts as ONE portion.' The rest of the label is based on this.
  2. Find 3 facts on 3 different foods: (1) serving size, (2) calories per serving, (3) sugar per serving.
  3. Compare 2 similar products (2 cereals, 2 yogurts, 2 crackers). Which has fewer calories per serving? Which has less sugar?
  4. Trick alert: some products list a tiny serving size so the numbers LOOK small. Check: is the serving size realistic? A bag of chips might say '1 serving = 14 chips' but most people eat the whole bag.
  5. Recalculate one product for 'how much I actually eat'. If serving size = 14 chips at 150 calories, and you eat 28, that's 300 calories and double sugar.
  6. Write down today's lesson: 'I can read a serving size and pick a good choice.'

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Pick 2 cereals (or 2 yogurts, 2 breads). Build a head-to-head analysis of which is healthier using 6 data points.

Steps

  1. Choose 2 similar products — say, 2 boxed cereals. Take both labels home.
  2. Build a comparison table with 6 rows (serving size, calories, sugar, fiber, protein, whole-grain %) and 2 columns (product A, product B).
  3. Fill in the data. For whole-grain %, read the ingredients list — if 'whole grain' is the first ingredient, it's mostly whole grain; if it's 5th or later, it's mostly refined flour.
  4. Apply 3 rules: (1) less sugar is better (aim <10g per serving for cereal), (2) more fiber is better (aim ≥3g per serving), (3) more protein is better, (4) shorter ingredient list is usually better.
  5. Rank the winner on each metric. Overall, which is healthier? Justify with data.
  6. Serving-size trap: check that both products compare at the SAME serving size. If one lists 30g and one lists 40g, recalculate per-serving numbers to match.
  7. Shelf-position investigation: where are sugary cereals placed in the grocery store (eye level for kids) vs. lower-sugar cereals (top and bottom shelves)? Visit the store and photograph. Why?
  8. Write a 1-page consumer report: your 2 cereals, their data table, the winner, and your recommendation.
  9. Extension: repeat with 2 yogurts — Greek vs. regular, kids' vs. adult. Apply the same framework.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Audit 5 'health claim' foods. Research what each claim means legally and whether the actual label supports it.

Steps

  1. Collect 5 foods with a health claim on the front: 'immune support', 'heart healthy', 'low-fat', 'natural', 'high in fiber', 'made with real fruit', 'zero grams sugar', 'gluten-free', 'probiotic'.
  2. Research each claim: what does the FDA legally require? 'Heart healthy' = certified by American Heart Association (specific nutrient criteria). 'Low-fat' = ≤3g per serving. 'High in fiber' = ≥5g per serving. 'Reduced sugar' = ≥25% less than the standard version. 'Natural' = legally undefined (basically marketing). 'Whole grain' = at least 51% whole grain.
  3. For each of your 5 products: (1) record the claim on the front, (2) check if the Nutrition Facts + ingredients support it, (3) rate the claim: LEGITIMATE, MISLEADING, or MEANINGLESS.
  4. Front-of-package vs. back-of-package battle: front usually emphasizes one good thing. Back usually reveals the full picture. Example: front says 'Made with real fruit!' — back ingredients show the first 3 are sugar, corn syrup, and flour, with 'natural strawberry flavor' at #12.
  5. Research greenwashing + healthwashing in food: companies dress up processed foods in green packaging, leaves, earthy colors to imply healthy. Photograph 3 examples.
  6. Research added-claim regulations: the FDA warns companies that use false health claims but many slip through. The FTC handles advertising fraud but usually only pursues high-profile cases.
  7. Design a consumer PSA: pick 1 misleading food you found and make a 1-minute educational video or poster teaching another kid how to spot the trick.
  8. Write a 2-page consumer audit report: include all 5 products, their claim analyses, the front-vs-back battle, and your PSA.
  9. Extension: research the lawsuits over Kellogg's 'Smart Start' (claimed it would lower cholesterol but didn't), Vitaminwater (claimed health benefits that didn't match the sugar), and POM Wonderful (claimed prostate cancer benefits). Real lawsuits happened.

Read the full activity before beginning. An adult should supervise tools, heat, food, outdoor work, movement, and experiments as appropriate. Completion records that the activity was done; the child’s explanation, work sample, photo, or demonstration is stronger evidence of learning than a completion check alone.
