- 10+ foods with ingredient lists (Early Elem)

Parent note
Pre-K skipped — too abstract. Frame sugar learning around energy and choices, not fear or restriction. Never call a child 'bad' or 'good' for eating sugar. Diabetes content can be scary — mention it as preventable and treatable, not doom.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)
Find the word SUGAR on packages. How much is in the foods you eat every day? Count teaspoons!
Steps
- Teach the sugar rule: 4 grams = 1 teaspoon of sugar. (Check on a label: one standard sugar packet at a coffee shop = 4g = 1 tsp.)
- Pick 5 snacks from your pantry: cereal, granola bar, yogurt, cookies, fruit snacks (or whatever is there).
- For each, find 'Sugars' on the Nutrition Facts label. Divide by 4 to get teaspoons.
- Measure that many teaspoons of actual sugar into a small bowl next to the package. Seeing the pile helps make it real.
- Compare: which snack has the most sugar? The least?
- Talk about the big idea: some packaged snacks have a lot of added sugar, so labels can help families compare choices. You do not need to total a whole day's sugar for this activity.
- Some sugar is natural (in fruit and plain milk) and comes with fiber, vitamins, or protein — that kind is fine. 'Added sugar' (listed in ingredients) is the one we watch.
- Pick 1 snack to swap: choose a lower-sugar option for tomorrow.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)
Sugar has 60+ aliases on ingredient lists. Become a sugar detective and find 5 sneaky names in your pantry.
Steps
- Study the sugar alias list: sucrose, glucose, fructose, dextrose, maltose, lactose (in milk — this one is natural), high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), agave nectar, honey, cane juice, evaporated cane juice, brown rice syrup, coconut sugar, date sugar, molasses, maltodextrin, maple syrup, turbinado, demerara, muscovado, fruit juice concentrate.
- The rule: anything ending in '-ose' or containing 'syrup' or 'cane' or 'malt' is almost certainly added sugar.
- Detective mission: pick 10 pantry items. Read ingredient lists carefully. Circle every sugar alias you find. How many items have sugar as the #1, #2, or #3 ingredient? (Ingredients are listed by weight — so #1 means sugar is the biggest part by weight.)
- Spot the 'stealth combo': some products list sugar 3 or 4 different ways (HFCS + cane juice + corn syrup + honey). This is done so no single sugar reaches #1 on the list — but all together, they dominate.
- Build a 'Sneaky Sugar Hall of Fame' poster: top 5 worst offenders in your pantry, each with its sugar aliases highlighted.
- Swap mission: find 1 low-sugar alternative for each top 5 offender. Try them at the store with your parent.
- Research: why is HFCS controversial? It's chemically similar to table sugar (~50% glucose, 50% fructose) but much cheaper and in nearly everything. The controversy is more about quantity than chemistry.
- Extension: compare 2 versions of the same food (regular vs. 'reduced sugar'). Does the reduced-sugar version replace sugar with artificial sweeteners? Research whether those are safer.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)
Trace sugar's journey through your body, understand the blood sugar rollercoaster, and design a stable-energy eating plan.
Steps
- Research sugar's body path: mouth (amylase breaks some sugar chains) → stomach → small intestine (where sugar enters the blood) → pancreas releases insulin → insulin lets cells use or store the sugar → if too much, liver converts excess to fat.
- The blood sugar curve: simple sugar (candy, soda) = fast spike in ~30 min + crash ~60 min after. Complex carbs (oatmeal, whole-grain bread) = gradual rise over 2 hours + slow decline. Protein + fat + fiber added to any carb = flatter, longer curve.
- Draw 3 curves on a graph: (a) blood sugar after a can of soda, (b) after a bowl of oatmeal, (c) after oatmeal + peanut butter + berries. Show the shape difference.
- Self-experiment: pick 3 meals to test this week. Morning 1 = just a donut. Morning 2 = oatmeal. Morning 3 = oatmeal + peanut butter + blueberries. After each, note at 30 min, 60 min, 90 min: energy (1-10), focus (1-10), hunger (1-10).
- Chart your 3 mornings. Which meal gave the flattest, steadiest energy? Which caused an energy crash? Most people feel the crash after the donut.
- Research insulin resistance: when a body gets huge sugar spikes day after day for years, cells start ignoring insulin. Blood sugar stays high. This is type 2 diabetes. 1 in 10 US adults has it; rates are rising in kids.
- Research broad guidance that many health groups give: meals with fiber, protein, and less added sugar often lead to steadier energy than sugary drinks or desserts alone. Keep the focus on patterns rather than calculating your own multi-day intake.
- Design a 'Stable Energy' eating plan: every meal includes carb + protein + fat + fiber. Write 3 days of meals that follow this rule. Cook at least one.
- Write a 1-page report including the 3-morning comparison, the stable-energy plan, the sugar path diagram, and one reflection on how labels or meal balance can help you make choices.
- Extension: research 'glycemic index' and 'glycemic load' — more precise ways to predict the sugar-spike effect of a food.
