Parent note

Pre-K skipped — macronutrients are abstract. Keep this lesson about pattern-spotting and meal design, not calorie counting or body optimization. Never frame meals as moral categories and never count calories for weight reasons at this age. If a child shows any sign of food anxiety, pause the lesson.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Meet the 3 food superheroes: Protein (builder), Carbs (energizer), and Fat (brain helper). Find them in your kitchen!

Steps

  1. Introduce the 3 superheroes with simple jobs: PROTEIN builds muscles, hair, and new cells (like a builder). CARBS give quick energy (like a runner). FAT helps the brain and keeps you warm (like a cozy blanket).
  2. Match 1 food to each hero: egg (protein), bread (carb), avocado (fat). Feel each food, describe it.
  3. Scavenger hunt: find 3 more of each in your kitchen. Protein: chicken, beans, yogurt, cheese, nuts. Carbs: rice, pasta, fruit, crackers, potato. Fat: butter, olive oil, cheese, salmon, almonds.
  4. Cheese is a 'double hero' — it has protein AND fat. Cheese is a team player.
  5. Balanced plate: put one of each hero on a plate for snack or lunch. 'My plate has a builder, an energizer, and a brain helper!'
  6. Draw 3 superhero cartoons labeled Protein, Carb, Fat with a food friend under each.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Read real nutrition labels. Find protein, carbs, and fat on 5 products and rank them by protein density.

Steps

  1. Learn the Nutrition Facts label layout: serving size → calories → fat (total, saturated, trans) → cholesterol → sodium → carbs (total, fiber, sugar) → protein → vitamins/minerals.
  2. Collect 5 food packages from home: yogurt, cereal, bread, cheese, crackers (or whatever is available).
  3. For each, record: product name, serving size, calories, protein (g), fat (g), carbs (g), sugar (g). Use a table.
  4. Calculate protein density = grams of protein per 100 calories. Example: Greek yogurt 100 cal, 17g protein = 17/100 = 17 g/100cal (very high). White bread 100 cal, 3g protein = 3 g/100cal (low).
  5. Rank your 5 foods by protein density. Usually: Greek yogurt, cheese, or chicken are highest; juice, bread, crackers are lowest.
  6. Learn the 4-9-4 rule: carbs have 4 calories per gram, protein has 4 calories per gram, fat has 9 calories per gram. Check math on one label: (carb g × 4) + (protein g × 4) + (fat g × 9) should ≈ total calories.
  7. Write 3 sentences: 'The food with the most protein per calorie was ___. The food with the most sugar was ___. One food I was surprised about was ___.'
  8. Extension: compare 2 yogurts — plain Greek vs. flavored kids' yogurt. Which has more protein? Which has more sugar? Usually plain Greek has 2x the protein and 1/3 the sugar.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Compare the macronutrient patterns of a few meals and redesign them for steadier energy, fullness, or focus.

Steps

  1. Review the idea that different meals can lean more toward carbs, protein, or fat, and that balanced meals often feel steadier.
  2. Pick 3 real meals or snacks from home. For each one, record the main carb source, protein source, fat source, and any fruit or vegetable.
  3. Instead of totaling a whole day, compare the meals side by side. Which one looks most balanced? Which one might leave you hungry sooner? Explain your reasoning.
  4. Pick one goal: steadier energy, stronger after-sports recovery, or better school focus. Talk with a parent about what kinds of foods might support that goal.
  5. Redesign 2 meals and 1 snack to better fit the goal. Keep the focus on adding helpful foods, not cutting foods out.
  6. Try one redesigned meal and rate how it felt for energy, focus, and fullness.
  7. Write a 1-page comparison report explaining what changed and what you noticed.
  8. Extension: research essential amino acids (9 the body can't make) and complete proteins (contain all 9). Animal proteins are complete; plant proteins are usually incomplete, but combinations (rice + beans) make complete protein. Why does this matter for vegetarians?
