Water Works
Water is your body's best friend! Track your water all day with a sticker chart.
Materials and setup
- water cup and stickers (Pre-K)
- 3 clear cups, food coloring, 3 celery stalks (Kinder)
- printed urine color chart (Early Elem)
- kitchen scale (Upper Elem)
- salt, lemon juice, honey (Upper Elem DIY electrolyte)
- commercial sports drink for comparison (Upper Elem)
- paper and pencils
Parent note
Urine-color tracking is private — discuss matter-of-factly. Encourage the child to self-check in the bathroom without announcing numbers at the table. Upper Elem DIY electrolyte: honey is not safe for children under 1, but all target ages are fine. Do NOT exceed the salt amount — over-salting causes the opposite problem.
How this changes by age
Pre-K (ages 3–4)
Water is your body's best friend! Track your water all day with a sticker chart.
Steps
- Show child their own cup. Fill with water. 'Your body is mostly water — about two-thirds water! It needs refills every day.'
- Make a sticker chart: draw 5 cups on paper. Each time the child drinks a full cup of water today, they put a sticker on one cup. Goal: 5 cups by bedtime.
- Drink the first cup together, clinking glasses. 'Cheers to our bodies!'
- Explain simply: 'Water makes your pee. Water keeps your skin soft. Water helps you play hard. Water cleans your tummy.'
- Notice thirst: teach the child to recognize thirst — dry mouth, sleepy feeling, headache. 'If you feel any of these, grab water first!'
- Bedtime check: count stickers. Celebrate any amount. Tomorrow, aim for more.
- Substitution rule: juice and milk have water in them, but water is still best. If the child asks for juice, offer water first.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)
Watch water travel through a celery stalk with colored water. See why plants AND your body need water to move nutrients.
Steps
- Fill 3 clear cups halfway with water. Add 10 drops of different food coloring to each (red, blue, yellow).
- Cut the bottom of 3 celery stalks. Place one in each cup. Predict what will happen in 24 hours.
- Wait 24 hours. Pull out each celery stalk. The leaves and veins are dyed the same color as the water — you can SEE the water path.
- Connect to your body: water moves through you the same way, carrying nutrients and oxygen to every cell, then carrying waste out. Without water, the transport system stops.
- Calculate YOUR water need: about 5-7 cups per day for a 5-6 year old, more if hot or active.
- Water-instead-of check: look through the fridge. Count: how many drinks are water? How many are not (juice, soda, chocolate milk)? Plan to choose water first today.
- Bonus: slice one dyed celery stalk crosswise. See the tiny colored tubes (xylem) that carried the water. Your veins do the same job in you.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)
Track hydration for a week using the urine color chart. Calculate and hit your personal daily water goal.
Steps
- Print or draw the urine color chart (8 levels). Post it near the home bathroom. Level 1-3 = well hydrated. 4-5 = drink more. 6-8 = dehydrated, drink now.
- Calculate your daily water target: 0.5-1 oz per pound of body weight. A 55-lb kid needs 28-55 oz (3.5-7 cups). Hot days, exercise, and illness add more.
- For 7 days, log: (1) morning urine color (1-8), (2) cups of water by bedtime, (3) other drinks (juice, milk), (4) activity level (low/medium/high), (5) weather (cool/warm/hot). Record honestly.
- After 7 days, graph: water cups vs. urine color. Did more water = lighter color? Almost always yes.
- Find your pattern: on days you hit your water target, how did you feel (energy, mood, headaches)? Compare to low-water days.
- Identify replacements: any Whoa drinks you could replace with water? Soda, sports drinks, juice. Try replacing one this week.
- Dehydration warning signs: write and post: 'Thirsty, headache, tired, dizzy, dark urine = drink water NOW.'
- Extension: test your response time (ruler drop) when well hydrated vs. when mildly dehydrated. Most people are measurably slower when dehydrated.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)
Investigate electrolytes, compare water vs. sports drinks vs. sodas, and design a hydration strategy for a real sports event.
Steps
- Research electrolytes: sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, chloride. They are minerals that carry electrical charge in body fluids. They control muscle contraction, nerve signals, fluid balance, and blood pressure.
- Sweat chemistry: when you sweat heavily (1+ hour intense exercise, hot weather), you lose water AND electrolytes. Replacing only water can dilute blood sodium (hyponatremia — dangerous).
- Comparison chart for 8 oz: plain water (0 calories, 0 sugar, 0 electrolytes); coconut water (45 cal, 11g sugar, 470mg potassium, 64mg sodium); typical sports drink (60 cal, 14g sugar — similar to soda, 160mg sodium, 55mg potassium); soda (90 cal, 25g sugar, ~35mg sodium, ~5mg potassium). Look up actual brands.
- When is plain water enough? For <60 min of exercise or normal daily activity — always. When do electrolytes matter? Hot-weather endurance events >90 min; heavy sweating; diarrhea or vomiting illness.
- DIY electrolyte drink: ½ tsp salt + 2 tbsp lemon juice + 2 tbsp honey in 16 oz water. Blind taste-test vs. a commercial sports drink. Which do you prefer? Which is cheaper? Which has less sugar?
- Design a hydration plan for a specific event: pick a real event (soccer game, long hike, competition). Plan: 16 oz water 2 hours before, 8 oz 30 min before, 6-8 oz every 15-20 minutes during, electrolyte drink if >60 min of intensity, 16-24 oz for every pound lost after.
- Test it: pick an activity, weigh yourself before and after, track drinks. Did your plan work?
- Write a 2-page report: include the electrolyte science, the 4-drink comparison, the DIY recipe, your event plan, and your personal test data.
- Extension: research caffeine and hydration — is coffee or tea dehydrating? (Modern research: mild diuretic effect but regular coffee drinkers adapt; overall still net hydrating.)

Read the full activity before beginning. An adult should supervise tools, heat, food, outdoor work, movement, and experiments as appropriate. Completion records that the activity was done; the child’s explanation, work sample, photo, or demonstration is stronger evidence of learning than a completion check alone.
