Parent note
Puberty content in the Upper Elem variant is age-appropriate but sensitive — parent should preview and adapt for each child. The material is framed clinically (hormones + body changes as a normal biological process) without romantic or sexual content. Parents may choose to skip the puberty section and cover the rest; offer the full content when the child is ready.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)
Your glands are chemical messengers — they release hormones that tell your body what to do. Meet 3 of the most important ones.
Steps
- Introduce the concept: your body has two main message systems. Nerves send electric signals (fast). Glands send chemical signals called hormones through the blood (slower but longer-lasting).
- Meet 3 hormones kids already experience: (1) ADRENALINE — made by adrenal glands (on top of kidneys), released when scared or excited. Heart races, hands get sweaty, eyes wide open. Body ready to run or fight. (2) MELATONIN — made by pineal gland in the brain, released at night to make you sleepy. Light blocks it, which is why screens at bedtime hurt sleep. (3) INSULIN — made by pancreas, released when you eat to move sugar from blood into cells for energy.
- Adrenaline experiment (controlled): play 1 minute of loud upbeat music and dance hard. How do you feel afterward? Heart racing, body buzzing? That's adrenaline.
- Melatonin experiment: track your sleep for 5 nights. Compare nights with screens 30 minutes before bed vs. nights with no screens. Which bedtime felt easier?
- Insulin lesson: after eating a piece of candy, do you feel energy then crash? That's a sugar spike triggering insulin. After eating a balanced meal (protein + carbs + fat), energy is steadier.
- Draw a body diagram with 3 glands labeled: adrenals (kidneys), pineal (brain), pancreas (behind stomach). Write one hormone + one job for each.
- Write 3 sentences: 'When I run fast, my body makes ___. When it's dark, my body makes ___. When I eat, my body makes ___.'

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)
Map the full endocrine system, learn 6 major glands, and preview puberty — the hormone event that transforms your body.
Steps
- Study 6 major endocrine glands: (1) HYPOTHALAMUS — brain's command center, controls other glands. (2) PITUITARY — 'master gland' at brain base, releases growth hormone, controls thyroid + adrenals + reproductive glands. (3) THYROID — neck, regulates metabolism (how fast you burn energy). (4) ADRENALS — on kidneys, adrenaline + cortisol (stress hormone). (5) PANCREAS — insulin (lowers blood sugar) + glucagon (raises blood sugar). (6) OVARIES / TESTES — reproductive hormones (estrogen / testosterone).
- Diagram the feedback loop: hypothalamus → pituitary → target gland → hormone → body effect → brain senses effect → adjusts signal. This is called a negative feedback loop.
- Thyroid example: hypothalamus releases TRH → pituitary releases TSH → thyroid releases T3/T4 → body speeds up metabolism. If T3/T4 is too high, hypothalamus stops releasing TRH.
- Cortisol research: released by adrenals in response to stress. Short-term = helpful (focus, energy). Long-term = harmful (sleep problems, suppressed immunity, anxiety). Research 3 ways to lower chronic cortisol: sleep 9-11 hours, daily movement, time outdoors.
- Puberty preview (factually, age-appropriate, with parent lead): the hypothalamus starts releasing GnRH (usually ages 8-13 for people assigned female at birth, 9-14 for people assigned male). This triggers the pituitary to release LH and FSH, which tell ovaries or testes to make estrogen or testosterone. Those hormones drive the physical changes of puberty: body hair, breast development, voice changes, growth spurt, acne, and reproductive maturity. It's normal. It takes years. Everyone's timing is different.
- Growth hormone & sleep: the pituitary releases most growth hormone during deep sleep (stages 3-4 of non-REM). Kids who sleep less grow less. Research: how many hours do 9-10 year olds need? (9-12 hours.)
- Track cortisol proxies for 5 days: stress events, sleep quality (1-5), energy at 3pm (1-5). Do high-stress days correlate with worse sleep or lower energy?
- Write a 2-page report: include a labeled endocrine system diagram, an explanation of feedback loops using thyroid as the example, and a personal 'hormone health plan' (3 habits that support healthy hormones).
- Extension: research diabetes type 1 (pancreas stops making insulin) vs. type 2 (body stops responding to insulin). How do treatments differ?
