Parent note

Kidney topic omits a Pre-K variant — too abstract. Any urine-color discussion should stay private, calm, and non-diagnostic. Avoid strict hydration formulas or body-weight math unless your pediatrician has given guidance for your child. If the child has any urinary condition, pain, fever, or unusual symptoms, consult a physician rather than using the activity as a diagnostic signal.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Steps

  1. Make 'dirty water': mix 1 cup water with a teaspoon of dirt, sand, or used coffee grounds. Stir until cloudy.
  2. Set up a filter: place a paper coffee filter in a funnel over a clear cup. Slowly pour the dirty water through.
  3. Watch what happens: clean water drips into the cup. The dirt stays in the filter. 'Your kidneys do this to your blood every minute of every day.'
  4. Look at a simple diagram: 2 kidneys (bean-shaped, on your back just below the ribs) → tubes called ureters → bladder (storage balloon) → out through the urethra.
  5. Put your hands on your lower back, fingers pointing up. 'Your kidneys are right here — about the size of your fists.'
  6. Talk about pee: it's mostly water, with cleaned-out salt and waste. The body makes 1-2 liters per day. That's why we need to drink water — to give the kidneys fresh water to clean with.
  7. Drink a big glass of water and celebrate your kidneys.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Map the urinary system and notice how hydration habits can affect how your body feels, using a private, parent-guided check-in.

Steps

  1. Draw a labeled diagram of the urinary system: 2 kidneys, 2 ureters, 1 bladder, 1 urethra. Add arrows showing fluid flow.
  2. Research kidney function: each kidney contains about 1 million tiny filtering units called nephrons. Together they filter ~180 liters of blood per day — most of that is reabsorbed, leaving about 1-2 liters as urine.
  3. Look up a simple urine color chart with a parent and talk about the broad idea: pale yellow often means well hydrated, while darker yellow can mean the body needs more fluids. This is a clue, not a diagnosis.
  4. For 5-7 days, keep a private family log with 3 columns: fluids you drank, active/sweaty time, and one body clue such as 'mouth felt dry' or 'felt good at recess.' Keep it matter-of-fact and use the family bathroom only.
  5. Instead of calculating a strict personal target, compare two kinds of days: cooler/rest days and hotter or more active days. On which days did you seem to need more water?
  6. After the week, graph either your water intake or your activity level and write 3 short observations about patterns you noticed.
  7. Close with the rule: if pee is very dark, painful, or anything feels unusual, tell a trusted adult rather than trying to solve it yourself.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Dive into nephron function, electrolyte balance, and what happens when kidneys fail. Build a nephron model.

Steps

  1. Research the nephron in detail: each has 5 parts — glomerulus (filter), proximal tubule (reabsorbs most water + nutrients), loop of Henle (concentrates urine), distal tubule (fine-tunes electrolytes), collecting duct (final water control via ADH hormone).
  2. Build a nephron model: use a coffee filter (glomerulus) dripping into a curved tube (loop of Henle), which leads to a collection cup (bladder). Label each part. Demonstrate 'reabsorption' by having an adult use a pipette to pull some water back out of the curve.
  3. Research electrolytes: sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride. Kidneys regulate all 5. Why do athletes drink sports drinks after heavy exercise? (Lost electrolytes + water.)
  4. Research dialysis at a high level: when kidneys stop doing enough filtering, a machine can help clean the blood. Watch a short educational video with a trusted adult and write a short summary of what surprised you.
  5. Research kidney donation: many people can live healthy lives with one kidney, and donation can save lives. Keep the focus on what kidneys do, not memorizing wait-list numbers.
  6. Skip any deliberate dehydration experiment. If you want a comparison task, do a ruler-drop reaction-time test on two ordinary days and note other factors like sleep, focus, or activity that might change results.
  7. Write a 1-page report on nephron function, one kidney-related condition, and two everyday habits that support kidney health.
  8. Extension: research how the kidneys regulate blood pressure (renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system) at a basic level.
