Pre-K (ages 3–4)

Your brain is the boss of your body! It tells every part what to do — even while you sleep.

Difficulty 1 of 3

Steps

  1. Point to your forehead. 'Your brain is inside here. It is the boss of your whole body.'
  2. Play 'Brain Says': parent says 'Brain says wave your hand!' — child waves. Try: blink, wiggle toes, stick out tongue, hop. The brain told the body parts to move, even without words.
  3. Try something harder: parent says a shape ('triangle') and child draws it in the air. 'Your brain remembered what a triangle looks like!'
  4. Sing a short song together. 'Your brain knows this song — it saved it for you.'
  5. Put on pretend 'brain hats' (hats on backwards) and jump 3 times. 'Your brain made your legs do that!'
  6. Close your eyes and touch your nose. 'Your brain knows where your body parts are, even with eyes closed.'
  7. Draw a picture of yourself and label your brain as the 'boss.'

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Your brain has 3 big jobs: thinking, moving, and feeling. Try each job and discover how smart your brain really is.

Steps

  1. Job 1 — Thinking: parent shows a simple puzzle (3-piece jigsaw, matching pairs, or a riddle). Child solves it. 'Your brain was thinking — working out how the pieces fit.'
  2. Job 2 — Moving: close your eyes and touch your nose with your index finger. Switch hands. Hop on one foot for 5 seconds. 'Your brain was telling your body exactly where to go.'
  3. Job 3 — Feeling: look at 4 emotion faces drawn on paper (happy, sad, mad, scared). Parent names a situation: 'A friend shared their toy with you' — child points to the matching feeling. Try 5 situations.
  4. Brain-fact time: your brain weighs about 3 pounds (like a small melon). It uses 20% of your body's energy — more than any other organ. It has 86 billion nerve cells called neurons.
  5. Reaction-time game: parent holds a crumpled paper ball up high. Drops it without warning. Child catches. 'Your eyes saw it, your brain decided to move, and your hand closed. All in less than a second!'
  6. Draw 3 circles labeled 'Think', 'Move', 'Feel' and draw one thing in each.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Meet the 4 brain lobes and what each one does. Run a reaction-time test and a memory test to see your brain at work.

Steps

  1. Draw a side view of the brain on paper. Label 4 lobes: frontal (front — planning + decisions), parietal (top — touch + body awareness), temporal (side — hearing + language), occipital (back — vision). Also label: cerebellum (under the back — balance and coordination), brain stem (bottom — automatic functions like heartbeat).
  2. Reaction-time ruler test: partner holds a 30cm ruler vertically, letting it hang between your open thumb and finger with the 0 mark even with your fingers. Without warning, partner releases. You catch. The cm mark where you caught it converts to reaction time: 5cm = 100ms, 10cm = 140ms, 15cm = 175ms, 20cm = 200ms, 30cm = 247ms.
  3. Do 5 trials. Which lobe helped most? (Occipital saw the ruler drop, frontal decided to catch, cerebellum coordinated the grab.)
  4. Memory test — sequence recall: parent says a sequence of 4 numbers (like 7-2-9-4), child repeats them back. Add one number each round. How long a sequence can you remember? Most kids: 5-7 digits. Adult working-memory limit: ~7 ± 2.
  5. Laterality experiment: write your name with your dominant hand. Time it. Write it again with your other hand. Time it. Why the difference? One brain hemisphere is trained for this task.
  6. Research: the brain's left hemisphere controls the right side of the body, and vice versa. Why does this 'cross-wiring' exist? (Evolutionary mystery — some theories involve eye placement and predator response.)
  7. Write 3 observations from today's tests on an index card.

Learning objectives

  • Observe laterality (handedness) as evidence of brain organization

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Investigate neurons, synapses, and reflexes. Design an experiment to distinguish conscious responses from automatic reflexes.

Steps

  1. Research neurons: the brain has ~86 billion neurons, each connected to thousands of others through gaps called synapses. When a neuron 'fires', an electrical signal travels down the neuron and triggers chemical messengers (neurotransmitters) that cross the synapse to the next neuron.
  2. Draw a labeled neuron: dendrites (receive signals), cell body, axon (sends signals), myelin sheath (insulation that speeds signals), axon terminals (release neurotransmitters).
  3. Reflex vs. conscious test — design: reflexes happen without brain involvement — they use a spinal shortcut called a reflex arc. Test the patellar reflex: sit with legs crossed, tap just below the kneecap with the edge of a book. Lower leg kicks involuntarily.
  4. Compare to a conscious action: parent taps your knee at unpredictable times, and you try to resist kicking. Can you? (No — by the time your brain knows, the spinal cord has already triggered the kick.)
  5. Time it: reflex arc (knee-jerk) takes ~50 ms. Conscious reaction (seeing and responding) takes ~200-250 ms. Why does the body use reflexes? (Speed — pulling your hand off a hot stove before the burn signal even reaches the brain saves tissue.)
  6. Design your own experiment: test whether reaction time improves with practice. Do 30 ruler-drop trials over 3 days. Graph the results. Are you faster on day 3? This is neuroplasticity — your brain literally rewires with practice.
  7. Research brain plasticity: neurons that fire together wire together (Hebbian learning). This is how skills are learned and memories are formed.
  8. Write a 1-page report: include a neuron diagram, a reflex-arc diagram, your reaction-time data across 3 days, and a paragraph on neuroplasticity.
  9. Extension: research one neurological condition (ADHD, dyslexia, epilepsy, or concussion) and write 3 sentences on how it affects the brain.

  • Explain neuroplasticity using personal practice data

Read the full activity before beginning. An adult should supervise tools, heat, food, outdoor work, movement, and experiments as appropriate. Completion records that the activity was done; the child’s explanation, work sample, photo, or demonstration is stronger evidence of learning than a completion check alone.
