Skeleton Crew
Trace your whole body on paper and stick on paper bones to build your own skeleton poster. Wiggle each part to see what bones can do.
Materials and setup
- large paper or butcher paper
- markers
- white paper for bone cutouts
- scissors (adult use for young children)
- glue or tape
- protractor (Early Elem+)
- 2 cardboard tubes, brass fastener, string, thick paper strips (Upper Elem)
Parent note
Upper Elem brass fastener assembly should be done by an adult. Young children: use pre-cut bone shapes to avoid scissor safety issues.
How this changes by age
Pre-K (ages 3–4)
Trace your whole body on paper and stick on paper bones to build your own skeleton poster. Wiggle each part to see what bones can do.
Steps
- Tape together sheets of paper or butcher paper tall enough for the child to lie on.
- Child lies down; parent traces around them with a marker.
- Cut simple bone shapes from white paper: a round skull, a ribcage (4 curved strips), a spine (one long strip), two arm bones, two leg bones, small foot and hand shapes.
- Child glues each bone into the right place on the outline while parent names it: 'This is your skull. Feel your head — it's hard! Your skull keeps your brain safe.'
- Wiggle-and-name dance: call out a body part ('elbow!'), child wiggles that part and touches where the bone is underneath.
- Hang the poster on the wall and revisit it in a week — can they still name 5 bones?

- Match bone names (skull, ribs, spine, arm, leg) to correct body locations
Kindergarten (ages 5–6)
Build your skeleton poster and learn 12 bones by name. Play 'Bone Bingo' to lock them in.
Steps
- Trace your body outline on large paper as in the Pre-K version.
- Cut and label 12 bone shapes: skull, jaw (mandible), collarbone (clavicle), sternum, ribs, spine, pelvis, humerus (upper arm), radius (lower arm), femur (thigh), tibia (shin), kneecap (patella). Use kid-friendly names in parentheses only if the child is ready.
- Glue each bone in place while parent prompts: 'Feel your collarbone — run your finger from shoulder to middle. Now feel your sternum in the middle of your chest.'
- Play Bone Bingo: make a 3×3 grid with 9 bone names. Parent calls a bone, child touches it on their own body AND points to it on the poster. Three-in-a-row wins.
- Movement test: which bones feel easy to find (close to skin)? Which feel hard to find (buried under muscle)? Make a list of 'easy-to-feel' and 'hidden' bones.
- Read-aloud ending: parent reads one kid-friendly fact about bones ('you were born with about 300 bones but have 206 as an adult — some fuse together as you grow').

Early elementary (ages 6–8)
Learn joint types and test each one's range of motion. Every joint in your body is built for a specific kind of movement.
Steps
- Learn 4 joint categories with one example each: hinge (elbow, knee — bends one direction like a door), ball-and-socket (shoulder, hip — rotates in many directions), pivot (neck top — rotates left/right), gliding (wrist — slides in multiple directions).
- Joint Tour: touch and move each joint. (1) Elbow — bend/straighten, try to rotate like a shoulder (you can't — that's hinge-only). (2) Shoulder — circle your arm in big loops. (3) Neck — rotate your head left and right without tilting (pivot at the top vertebra, called the atlas). (4) Wrist — make small gliding motions. Fill in a chart: joint name, type, motions it allows.
- Range of motion measurement: use a protractor to measure how far your elbow bends (usually 0° straight to ~145° bent) and compare left vs. right elbow. Same for knee.
- Ligament vs. tendon vocabulary: ligaments connect bone to bone (hold the joint together), tendons connect muscle to bone (pull the bone when the muscle tightens). Draw a picture of a knee showing both.
- Safety lesson: why stretching matters — tight muscles limit joint motion, and going too fast can tear ligaments. Practice a 5-minute warm-up that moves each joint category.
- Exit ticket: on an index card, name 2 hinge joints, 2 ball-and-socket joints, and 1 pivot joint.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)
Engineer a working cardboard arm that flexes like yours. Model how opposing muscle pairs pull on bones through tendons.
Steps
- Materials prep: 2 cardboard tubes (paper towel roll cut in half for 'humerus' and 'radius'), 1 brass fastener (elbow joint), string (tendons), 2 strips of thick paper (biceps and triceps muscles), tape.
- Assemble the arm: flatten one end of each cardboard tube, overlap the flat ends, and secure with the brass fastener so the tubes can rotate like an elbow.
- Attach the biceps strip to the 'shoulder' end of the humerus tube and to the front of the radius tube near the fastener. Attach the triceps strip to the back of the humerus and the back of the radius near the fastener.
- Thread string from the top of each muscle strip. When you pull the biceps string down, the arm bends (flexion). When you pull the triceps string down, the arm straightens (extension). This is an 'antagonistic pair'.
- Experiment: what happens if you pull both strings at once? (The arm locks — this is 'co-contraction', what your body does for stability.) Record your observation.
- Write a short engineering report: (1) how the model represents the real arm, (2) what the model gets wrong or simplifies (e.g., real muscles are bundles of fibers, not single strips; there are more muscles in the arm than biceps/triceps), (3) one improvement you would make.
- Extension: look up a prosthetic arm. Modern myoelectric prostheses use electrical signals from remaining muscles to control the hand. Write 3 sentences on how this relates to your model.
- Safety note: brass fasteners are sharp. Adult assembles the fastener step.
Learning objectives
- Build a mechanical model demonstrating antagonistic muscle-bone action
- Explain flexion, extension, and co-contraction with an accurate model
- Critique their own model — identify what it simplifies vs. what it represents well
Safety and evidence note
Read the full activity before beginning. An adult should supervise tools, heat, food, outdoor work, movement, and experiments as appropriate. Completion records that the activity was done; the child’s explanation, work sample, photo, or demonstration is stronger evidence of learning than a completion check alone.
