The Five Senses Lab
Visit 5 sense-stations set up around the room. At each station, discover what your eyes, ears, nose, tongue, or skin can do.
Materials and setup
- 4 small objects for touch bag (cotton ball, pinecone, spoon, sponge)
- 3 smell jars (cinnamon, lemon peel, coffee grounds)
- 3 safe tastes (apple slice, pretzel, plain yogurt — adjust for allergies)
- 3 sound shakers (rice cup, coin cup, bell)
- blindfold
- plastic wrap and bowl (Early Elem+)
- rice grains
- cotton swabs and 4 taste solutions (Early Elem+)
- 30 cm ruler (Upper Elem)
- paper and pencils
Parent note
Taste stations: confirm no allergies before offering any food. The tongue 'taste map' with strict zones is a common myth — the up-to-date teaching is that all taste types can be sensed across the tongue, with minor sensitivity variation.
How this changes by age
Pre-K (ages 3–4)
Visit 5 sense-stations set up around the room. At each station, discover what your eyes, ears, nose, tongue, or skin can do.
Steps
- Set up 5 stations: (1) Mystery Touch Bag with 4 objects (cotton ball, pinecone, spoon, sponge), (2) Smell Jars with 3 scents (cinnamon, lemon peel, coffee grounds), (3) Taste Test with 3 tiny tastes (apple slice, pretzel, plain yogurt — no allergens), (4) Sound Shakers (rice in cup, coins in cup, bell), (5) Look-and-Find I-Spy picture book or tray.
- At each station, ask: 'Which sense are you using?' Child answers ('touch!' 'smell!') and names the body part they used.
- After all 5 stations, line up pictures of eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin. Child places each station's object next to the matching body part.
- Close with a song: 'Five Senses' (to the tune of 'Are You Sleeping') — 'Eyes for seeing, ears for hearing, nose for smell, nose for smell, tongue for tasting yummy, skin for feeling fuzzy, that makes five, that makes five.'
- Parent Tip: avoid food allergens the child reacts to; always supervise taste station.
- Make a 5-square 'senses map' and draw one thing you sensed at each station.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)
Run the 5-sense lab with a twist — race your senses! Which one reports information the fastest? Which one is hardest to fool?
Steps
- Set up all 5 stations as in the Pre-K version, plus one blindfold.
- Sense Speed Race: parent drops a bell from shoulder height. Which sense noticed it first — eyes (saw it fall) or ears (heard it land)? Repeat 5 times and tally.
- Fool-a-Sense challenge: taste an apple slice with nose pinched, then again with nose free. Does apple taste different without smell? (Yes — smell and taste work together.)
- Skin-map game: close eyes while parent taps lightly on fingertip, palm, forearm, and back. Which area can you feel the lightest? Fingertips have the most nerve endings.
- Draw each sense organ with arrows showing what information it sends to the brain.
- End with a 'thank your senses' story: each person names one thing they're glad their senses noticed today.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)
Dissect each sense down to the key structure inside its organ: retina, eardrum, taste buds, olfactory bulb, and nerve endings. Diagram each and test how they work.
Steps
- Research and draw a labeled diagram of each sense organ: eye (pupil, iris, lens, retina, optic nerve), ear (outer ear, eardrum, tiny bones, cochlea), nose (nostril, olfactory receptors, olfactory bulb), tongue (papillae, taste buds for sweet/salty/sour/bitter/umami), skin (epidermis, dermis, nerve endings).
- Build a model eardrum: stretch plastic wrap tight over a bowl, sprinkle 10 grains of rice on top. Hold a speaker or make a loud sound nearby — watch the rice bounce. The eardrum vibrates the same way.
- Bust the 'taste map' myth: old textbooks claimed sweet lives on the tip, bitter at the back, salty and sour on the sides. PREDICT that first, then test it. Put a tiny drop of lemon juice (sour), saltwater, sugar water, and unsweetened cocoa (bitter) on the tip, sides, and back of the tongue using a clean cotton swab. Rinse between samples. Did every taste register on every zone? (Yes — that's the point. All 5 tastes are sensed across the whole tongue, with only tiny sensitivity differences.) Write what the myth got wrong.
- Test two-point discrimination: close eyes. Parent gently touches fingertip with one or two toothpick tips (rounded ends). Can you tell? Try same test on palm, forearm, back. Record the smallest distance you can tell apart in each area.
- Write a one-paragraph lab report: which sense surprised you most, and why?
Learning objectives
- Identify the key anatomical structure inside each of the 5 sense organs
- Demonstrate how sound becomes vibration using a model eardrum
- Collect and record sensory data (taste sensitivity, touch discrimination)
Upper elementary (ages 8–10)
Investigate the nerve-to-brain pathway for each sense. Design and run an experiment testing reaction time across multiple senses, and analyze the data.
Steps
- Research the signal path for each sense: eye → optic nerve → thalamus → visual cortex; ear → auditory nerve → auditory cortex; nose → olfactory nerve (the only sense that skips the thalamus) → olfactory cortex; tongue → cranial nerves VII, IX, X → gustatory cortex; skin → spinal cord → somatosensory cortex. Draw all 5 pathways on one brain diagram.
- Reaction-time experiment setup: use the ruler-drop test. Partner holds a 30cm ruler vertically above your open hand. They drop it without warning. You catch it. The cm mark where you caught it converts to reaction time (10cm ≈ 140ms, 20cm ≈ 200ms, 30cm ≈ 247ms).
- Test 3 conditions: (a) visual cue only — catch when you see it fall, (b) auditory cue — partner says 'now!' at the same moment they release, eyes closed, (c) tactile cue — partner taps your shoulder at release, eyes closed. 10 trials per condition.
- Build a data table: condition, trial 1-10 (cm), average (cm), estimated reaction time (ms). Graph results as a bar chart.
- Analyze: which sense had the fastest reaction time? Why might that be? (Hint: sound pathway involves fewer neural steps than vision in some scenarios; touch pathways can also be very fast.)
- Write a 1-page lab report with hypothesis, method, data table, graph, and conclusion. Include one question your experiment raised but didn't answer.
- Optional extension: research 'synesthesia' — the crossing of senses — and write 3 sentences on what it is.

Safety and evidence note
Read the full activity before beginning. An adult should supervise tools, heat, food, outdoor work, movement, and experiments as appropriate. Completion records that the activity was done; the child’s explanation, work sample, photo, or demonstration is stronger evidence of learning than a completion check alone.
