- A note is a musical sound! Different notes sound different — some are high like a tweeting bird, and some are low like a big drum. Every note has a name, like C or D or E. When you play notes one after another, you can make a song. Music is just notes put together in special patterns!
- A piano has white keys and black keys that make notes! The white keys are named C, D, E, F, G, A, and B — those are the first seven letters of the alphabet. Look closely at a piano and you'll see the black keys come in groups of 2 and 3 — that pattern repeats all the way across. The C note is always the white key just to the left of every group of 2 black keys.
- When you press a key, it plays a note. Press many keys in a row to make a melody! A melody is like a musical sentence — the notes tell a story. Try playing C, then D, then E — that's the start of a melody! You can make up your own songs by pressing different keys.

- The musical alphabet goes A, B, C, D, E, F, G — then it repeats again starting at A! That means it only has 7 letters, unlike the regular alphabet which has 26. After you get to G, you go back to A but the note sounds higher. Music has been using these 7 letter names for over 1,000 years.
- On a piano, the white keys spell out the notes: C, D, E, F, G, A, B, then C again. There are 52 white keys and 36 black keys on a full piano — 88 keys in total. The black keys come in groups of 2 and 3 to help you find C — the white key just left of any group of 2 black keys is always C. The piano was invented in Italy around 1700 by Bartolomeo Cristofori.
- Each key makes a different sound, and C is a friendly starting note because it has no sharps or flats — it's a pure C. Many beginner songs use only the white keys. The musical scale starting on C is called "C major" and it sounds happy and bright. Composers like Mozart and Beethoven wrote some of their most famous music in C major.

- The C major scale uses seven white keys: C, D, E, F, G, A, B — then the pattern repeats at the next C (called an octave). The word "octave" comes from Latin "octavus" meaning eight, because if you count both Cs you get 8 notes. The C major scale has no sharps or flats, which is why it's the easiest scale to play. Many famous songs are written in C major, including "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" and "Jingle Bells."
- Middle C is the C in the middle of a piano keyboard — it is the most common starting note for beginners. On the musical staff, Middle C sits right between the treble clef (for high notes) and the bass clef (for low notes), on a small extra line called a ledger line. The full piano has 7 complete octaves plus a few extra notes. Middle C is also written as C4 because it's the 4th C on a standard 88-key piano.
- Notes are written on a musical staff (five horizontal lines) with a clef symbol at the start. The treble clef looks like a fancy curl wrapped around the G line; the bass clef looks like a curled ear with two dots around the F line. A note's position on the staff tells you which key to play — notes get higher as they move up the staff. The system of writing music with notes on staves was developed by an Italian monk named Guido d'Arezzo around 1000 CE.

- The chromatic scale includes all 12 half-steps between octaves: C, C♯/D♭, D, D♯/E♭, E, F, F♯/G♭, G, G♯/A♭, A, A♯/B♭, B. The pitches with two names (sharps and flats of neighboring notes) are called "enharmonic equivalents" — same sound, different name. Most Western music uses 7-note scales (like the major and minor scales) drawn from these 12 notes. The 12-tone equal temperament tuning system became standard in Europe by the late 1800s.
- Frequency determines pitch: A4 vibrates at exactly 440 Hz (the modern "concert pitch" standard set internationally in 1955). Higher frequencies = higher pitch. The human ear can typically hear from about 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz, with sensitivity peaking around 2,000–5,000 Hz (the frequency range of human speech). Older instruments tuned to A=415 Hz (Baroque pitch) or A=432 Hz (still used by some musicians today) sound noticeably lower.
- An octave is the interval between a note and the next note with the same letter name (e.g., C4 to C5) — and doubling the frequency moves a note up exactly one octave. This 2:1 ratio is one of the most universal musical relationships, recognized across cultures because it sounds so consonant. Pythagoras is credited with discovering octave ratios around 500 BCE while experimenting with strings of different lengths. The brain processes octave pairs as "the same note" — this is called octave equivalence.
