- Counting means saying one number for one thing. One bear, two bears, three bears — your finger touches a new bear every time you say the next number.
- The numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 always come in the same order. Once you know them in order, you can count anything!
- When you finish counting, the last number you say is the total — the answer to 'how many?'

- Counting works as long as you say one number for each thing — and you don't skip anything or count the same thing twice. That rule is called one-to-one correspondence.
- If two groups have the same number of things, they're equal. If you can match them up one-to-one with nothing left over, they're the same size.
- Numbers don't stop at 10. After 10 comes 11, 12, 13, all the way up. Most of the teens have 'teen' on the end — sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen — but a few are tricky words you just have to remember: eleven, twelve, thirteen, and fifteen don't follow that pattern.

- When you count past 20, you're using a pattern: every group of ten gets a name (twenty, thirty, forty…) and the ones repeat the small-number pattern (twenty-one, twenty-two…). Learning the pattern lets you count to 100 without memorizing 100 separate words.
- Numbers can describe more than how many objects you see — they also tell you order. The 3rd person in line and 3 people in the kitchen both use the number 3, but in different ways.
- Zero is the number you say when there's nothing to count. It feels strange — why have a name for nothing? — but zero is what makes our whole number system work, and we'll meet it again soon.

- Counting is the oldest math humans do. Archaeologists have found bones over 40,000 years old with notches scratched into them — early humans tracking days, animals, or shares of food. The Lebombo bone from southern Africa, dated to roughly 42,000 years ago, is one of the most famous examples.
- Different cultures invented different number names but the same counting idea. English, Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, and Hindi all have one-to-one names for 1–10 — but Mandarin's pattern after 10 is so regular ('ten-one' for 11, 'two-ten' for 20) that Chinese-speaking kids tend to learn counting noticeably faster than English-speaking kids in early studies.
- The numbers we write — 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 — are called Hindu-Arabic numerals. They were developed in India, refined by Arab mathematicians, and reached Europe around the year 1200, replacing the much clumsier Roman numerals (which had no zero and used letters like XLVII for 47).

How to judge this sample
Look for age-appropriate language, a meaningful change in reasoning demand, factual accuracy, and a question that matches the instruction. Source coverage varies by lesson; absence of a URL does not make a fact false, but it does make the claim harder to audit. That is one reason we publish our learning-quality and correction standard.
