- Not just bones! We can find fossil footprints, teeth, skin impressions, and even dinosaur poop — which scientists call coprolite!
- It takes millions and millions of years for a dinosaur bone to turn into hard rock — the bone gets buried deep, water fills it with minerals, and slowly, it becomes stone.

- Trace fossils include footprints, nests, and coprolites (fossilized poop) — these don't show the animal's body, but they DO reveal how the animal actually lived and behaved.
- The study of fossils is called paleontology, from Greek words meaning "study of ancient beings" — and paleontologists are our only window into what dinosaurs were really like.

- Carbon-14 dating works for organic remains up to about 50,000 years old; for dinosaur-age finds, paleontologists date nearby volcanic rock layers with methods such as potassium-argon dating, which can measure ages spanning millions to billions of years.
- Mary Anning, a young girl in 1800s England, discovered some of the most important fossils ever found — including the first-known Plesiosaur and Ichthyosaur skeletons, making her one of paleontology's founders.
