Materials and setup

Parent note

Reduced-mobility adaptation: juggling, ball-bouncing, catching, and cross-body exercises are all already seated-accessible. For the agility ladder drills (hop/shuffle), swap in a 'hand agility' ladder: tape squares on a table and tap hands into each square in patterns (in-in-out-out, left-right alternations) as fast as possible — trains the same reaction and sequencing skills. For the jump-rope coordination segment, use the 'seated rope rhythm' swap from phys-008. The reaction-time ruler-drop test and peripheral-vision test are fully seated-accessible as-is. The cerebellum/neuroscience research and the progress-tracking goals transfer completely. Cross-body exercises (right hand to left knee) still work seated — the bilateral brain-training benefit is the same.

Pre-K (ages 3–4)

Steps

  1. Set up a simple obstacle course: pillows to jump over, a blanket to crawl under, tape line to balance on, and cones to weave around.
  2. Demonstrate each obstacle first, then cheer your child through the course.
  3. Try the course 3 times. Can you go faster each time?
  4. Add a new challenge: hop on one foot, carry a ball, or walk backwards through one section.
  5. Celebrate by giving each other high-fives!
  6. Trace your shoe on paper at the start; draw a star on it for every round you finished.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Build coordination through targeted activities: ball bouncing, jump rope basics, catching with one hand, and balance beam walking.

Steps

  1. Bounce a ball 10 times with both hands, then try 10 with your dominant hand, then 10 with the other.
  2. Jump rope practice: start by stepping over a rope on the ground, then try swinging it over and jumping.
  3. Catch practice: toss a ball in the air and catch it. Count your catches in a row without dropping.
  4. Balance beam: walk along a line of tape on the floor forward, backward, and sideways.
  5. Create a coordination circuit: do each activity for 1 minute, then rotate. Time 3 rounds.

  • Maintain balance while moving in different directions

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Master advanced coordination skills: juggling basics, agility drills, rhythm-based movement, and sport-specific coordination exercises.

Steps

  1. Juggling basics: start with one scarf (toss and catch), progress to two, work toward three. Practice for 10 minutes.
  2. Agility ladder drills: hop in and out, side shuffle, two feet in each square. Time yourself and try to improve.
  3. Rhythm coordination: clap a pattern, then add foot stomps, then try both at the same time.
  4. Cross-body exercises: touch right hand to left knee, left hand to right knee. Do 20 alternating in a row.
  5. Design your own obstacle course with at least 8 stations testing different skills. Time family members.
  6. Track your coordination improvements: record your juggling catches, agility time, and balance duration each week.
  7. Fill in a 5-row progress chart across the week for the skill you're practicing.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Train sport-specific coordination: reaction time, peripheral vision, complex footwork patterns, and motor planning for advanced athletic movements.

Steps

  1. Test reaction time: have a partner drop a ruler and catch it. Measure where you caught it (lower = faster reaction).
  2. Practice peripheral vision: focus on a point straight ahead while a partner holds up fingers to the side. How many can you see?
  3. Complex footwork: learn a multi-step footwork pattern (crossover, shuffle, sprint) and practice until smooth.
  4. Hand-eye precision: bounce a ball against a wall and catch it. Move farther away. Alternate hands. Add a clap between throw and catch.
  5. Study the neuroscience of coordination: how does the brain control movement? What role does the cerebellum play?
  6. Create a 4-week coordination training plan targeting your weakest areas, with measurable goals and progress tracking.

Safety and evidence note

Read the full activity before beginning. An adult should supervise tools, heat, food, outdoor work, movement, and experiments as appropriate. Completion records that the activity was done; the child’s explanation, work sample, photo, or demonstration is stronger evidence of learning than a completion check alone.
