Obstacle Course Builder

Build a simple backyard obstacle course together! Crawl under a table, jump over a pool noodle, walk along a line, and toss a ball into a bucket.

Materials and setup

Parent note

Set up the obstacle course in the yard or a large room before starting. Check the ground for hazards. Secure any items that could tip over. Have water available for hydration breaks. Adjust station difficulty based on your child's abilities. Reduced-mobility adaptation: build a tabletop or lap-tray version of the course. Swap 'crawl under a chair' for 'roll a ball under a chair'; swap 'step over a pool noodle' for 'push a toy car over a ruler'; swap 'walk a tape line' for 'trace a tape line with a finger without lifting'; keep 'toss a ball into a bucket' at a seated height. The design-thinking, scoring, and iteration goals are identical. For wheelchair users, a full-size course still works if you swap the step-over stations for 'roll through a cone slalom' and the crawl-under for 'duck your head under a streamer.'

How this changes by age

Pre-K (ages 3–4)

Difficulty 1 of 3

Steps

  1. Set up 4-5 simple stations using household items: crawl under a chair, step over a pool noodle, walk along a tape line, toss a ball into a bucket.
  2. Walk through the course together first, showing each station.
  3. Child completes the course with encouragement.
  4. Rearrange stations and try it again in a new order.
  5. Celebrate with a 'you did it!' dance at the finish line.
  6. Trace your shoe on paper at the start; draw a star on it for every round you finished.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Design and build your own obstacle course! Plan it on paper first, set it up, and challenge family members. Time each person and crown a champion!

Steps

  1. Give the child paper to design their obstacle course with 6-8 stations.
  2. Gather materials together and build the course following their design.
  3. Test the course themselves and adjust anything too hard or too easy.
  4. Time each family member going through the course.
  5. Record times and discuss: 'What station was hardest? How could we make it even more challenging?'

  • Build and test a creation, iterating on the design
  • Measure and compare time-based performance data

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Design a scored obstacle course with a point system. Each station earns points based on performance (speed, accuracy, or completion level). Create scorecards and run a family tournament.

Steps

  1. Design an 8-station obstacle course with a scoring rubric for each station (e.g., ball toss: 3 points for bucket, 2 points for close miss, 1 point for attempt).
  2. Draw a course map with station numbers, descriptions, and point values.
  3. Build the course and create printed scorecards for each participant with all station names and point columns.
  4. Run the tournament: each participant goes through the course while a scorer records points at each station.
  5. Tally all scores. Award a first, second, and third place.
  6. Redesign one station to make it harder and run a bonus round for extra points.
  7. Before anyone runs your course, do a Safety Inspection. Walk it slowly. Look for: sharp edges, slippery spots, things that could fall, anywhere a head could hit hardware, anywhere someone could trip onto something hard. Make a Safety Checklist (5 items minimum). Fix every hazard before guests run the course. This is what real engineers and event planners do — it's called a 'site walk-through.'
  8. Fill in a 5-row progress chart across the week for the skill you're practicing.

Learning objectives

  • Iterate on course design based on observed difficulty and participant feedback

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Research real obstacle course race formats (like Ninja Warrior or Tough Mudder), then design, build, and host a themed obstacle course event. Create a course guide, train for it, and time competitors with split times at each station.

Steps

  1. Research 2-3 obstacle course race formats. Note the types of obstacles they use (climbing, balance, grip strength, agility) and how they score or time participants.
  2. Design a 10-station course inspired by your research. Include at least one each of: a balance challenge, a climbing/strength challenge, an agility challenge, and an accuracy challenge.
  3. Create a course guide document with a map, station descriptions, rules, and safety notes for each obstacle.
  4. Build the course using available materials. Test every station yourself first for safety.
  5. Train for 2-3 days: practice the hardest stations and time yourself improving.
  6. Host the event: time each participant with split times at stations 3, 6, and 10. Create a results sheet showing total time and split comparisons.
  7. Write a post-event analysis: which obstacle was the biggest time separator? What would you change for version 2?

Safety and evidence note

Read the full activity before beginning. An adult should supervise tools, heat, food, outdoor work, movement, and experiments as appropriate. Completion records that the activity was done; the child’s explanation, work sample, photo, or demonstration is stronger evidence of learning than a completion check alone.
