How this changes by age
Pre-K (ages 3–4)
Clap long and short sounds.
Steps
- A grown-up claps 4 long claps (each one lasts 4 seconds). Copy.
- Then they clap 4 short claps. Copy.
- Now mix: long-short-short-long. Copy.
- Draw one big circle for each long clap and one small circle for each short.
- Say: 'Long sounds and short sounds make rhythms!'
Learning objectives
- Distinguish long from short sounds
- Copy mixed-length rhythms
- Visualize sounds with size
Kindergarten (ages 5–6)
Learn whole, half, and quarter notes.
Steps
- Learn: whole note = 4 beats, half note = 2 beats, quarter note = 1 beat.
- Clap a quarter note on each count: 1-2-3-4.
- Clap a half note on 1 and 3 (hold for 2 beats each).
- Clap a whole note once on 1 (hold for 4 beats).
- On paper, draw a whole note (open circle), a half (open circle with stem), and a quarter (filled circle with stem).
Learning objectives
- Define whole, half, quarter notes by beat count
- Clap each duration correctly
- Draw each note shape
Early elementary (ages 6–8)
Add eighth notes and rests; read a 4-measure rhythm.
Steps
- Learn: eighth note = half a beat (two eighths per beat, counted 'one-and').
- Learn rests: whole rest, half rest, quarter rest, eighth rest — each lasts the same time as the matching note but is silent.
- A grown-up writes a 4-measure rhythm using quarter, half, and eighth notes plus at least one rest.
- Clap and say the rhythm with counting syllables (1-and-2-and etc.).
- Do 3 more rhythms in a row without losing the beat.
Learning objectives
- Read eighth notes and rests
- Perform rhythms with counting
- Sustain a beat across measures
Upper elementary (ages 8–10)
Compose and perform an 8-measure rhythm in 4/4 time.
Steps
- Using manuscript paper, set up 8 measures of 4/4 time.
- Compose a rhythm using whole, half, quarter, eighth notes, and at least 2 rests.
- Include at least one syncopation (e.g., an eighth rest followed by eighth note on beat 1).
- Clap the full rhythm with counting syllables at 80 bpm.
- Perform it on a drum or tabletop at the metronome tempo.
- Teach it to a family member and perform it together.
Learning objectives
- Compose a multi-measure rhythm
- Include syncopation intentionally
- Perform with a metronome and a partner
Safety and evidence note
Read the full activity before beginning. An adult should supervise tools, heat, food, outdoor work, movement, and experiments as appropriate. Completion records that the activity was done; the child’s explanation, work sample, photo, or demonstration is stronger evidence of learning than a completion check alone.
