Steps

  1. Gather 5 real fruits or pictures of fruits.
  2. A grown-up says each fruit name in the target language. The child repeats and touches the fruit.
  3. Practice 3 times. Try to remember each name without help by the end.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Set up a pretend fruit stand with 5 items labeled in the target language. A parent 'buys' from you and you say the price in the target language.

Steps

  1. Choose 5 fruits or play foods. With a parent's help, write a label for each one in the target language and tape it to the item.
  2. Pick a price for each (1 to 5 coins) and practice saying the numbers in the target language.
  3. A parent comes to your stand and 'buys' each item. Say the fruit name and the price in the target language as you sell it.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Run a market stall with 5 items, all labeled in the target language with prices. Use numbers, color words, and size words. Greet customers in the target language.

Steps

  1. Set up 5 items at your stall. Make labels in the target language with the item name and price.
  2. Look up and practice color and size words in the target language for each item ('big red apple,' 'small green pear').
  3. When a family member visits your stall, greet them in the target language ('Hello, welcome!'), describe the item using the color and size words, and tell them the price.
  4. Run the stall for 10 minutes and try to sell at least 3 items in the target language.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Run a full bilingual market stall. Use 5 items, target-language labels and prices, polite greetings, and negotiation phrases in a target-language role-play.

Steps

  1. Set up 5 items at your stall with target-language labels and prices in the target language. Make a small sign with your stall name in the target language.
  2. Prepare and practice these phrases in the target language: a greeting, 'How can I help you?', the item names, the prices, 'This is too expensive — can you lower the price?', 'I'll take two,' and 'Thank you, come again.'
  3. Find a customer: a family member, tutor, or another trusted target-language speaker.
  4. Run the stall using only the target language for the interaction as much as you can. Greet, describe items, take orders, negotiate, and close politely.
  5. Afterward, write 5 sentences in the target language about how the stall went, what you sold, and which phrases were hardest.

Completion records that the activity was done; the child’s explanation, work sample, photo, or demonstration is stronger evidence of learning than a completion check alone.
