Visit a construction site (from a safe distance) or a hardware store with a parent. Name 3 tools you see.

Steps

  1. With a parent, visit a construction site (stay at a safe distance behind any fence) or a hardware store.
  2. Look around. Point to 3 tools or machines you see.
  3. Ask a parent: 'What is that called? What does it do?'
  4. Draw one of the tools in your notebook when you get home.
  5. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

  • Notice that engineers and builders use specialized tools
  • Learn the names of 3 real-world tools
  • Practice safe observation in a real work environment

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Visit a maker space, fab lab, or workshop and watch one project being built. Notice the first step and the last step.

Steps

  1. With a parent, visit a maker space, a fab lab, or a workshop where someone is building something.
  2. Pick one project to watch. Stand a safe distance away.
  3. Notice: what is the FIRST step the builder takes? What is the LAST step you see?
  4. Sketch the project in your notebook.
  5. Tell a parent what you noticed about the building process.

  • Recognize that projects have an order of steps

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Tour a construction site, woodshop, or auto repair shop with a parent. Briefly interview one worker about what they build and their favorite tool.

Steps

  1. With a parent, arrange a tour of a construction site, woodshop, or auto repair shop. (Parent confirms safety and permission first.)
  2. Bring a notebook, pencil, and (optional) camera.
  3. Walk through and observe what is being built or repaired.
  4. With a parent's help, briefly interview one worker. Ask: 'What do you build here? What is your favorite tool, and why?'
  5. Sketch one tool you saw in your notebook and label its parts.
  6. Back home, share what you learned with a family member.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Arrange and conduct a 30-minute site visit to a construction site, maker space, fab lab, or machine shop. Observe, interview, and write a 1-page reflection.

Steps

  1. With a parent, arrange a 30-minute site visit. Options: construction site, maker space, fabrication shop, woodshop, machine shop. Confirm safety and permission ahead of time.
  2. Bring a notebook, pencil, and (optional) camera.
  3. Observe and take notes on: What problems are these engineers or tradespeople solving? What tools and machines do they use? What does a typical day look like?
  4. Briefly interview at least one worker. Ask: 'What training did you need for this job? What is the hardest part? What is the most rewarding part?'
  5. Sketch the workspace layout and label key tools or stations.
  6. Back home, write a 1-page reflection: what surprised you, what you learned about the trade, and whether it is something you might want to try.

Safety and evidence note

Read the full activity before beginning. An adult should supervise tools, heat, food, outdoor work, movement, and experiments as appropriate. Completion records that the activity was done; the child’s explanation, work sample, photo, or demonstration is stronger evidence of learning than a completion check alone.
